AKINORI GOTO

後藤 映則

Artist / Associate Professor at Musashino Art University

Born in Gifu, Japan (1984), lives and works in Tokyo.

2006  BFA, Musashino Art University

Goto explores themes of time, movement, flow, and a sense of life as they relate to human perception and existence, employing video, sculpture, and installation as his primary means of expression. His work spans from early film-based media to contemporary technologies, bridging traditional and modern approaches. In recent years, he has focused on “walking,” a fundamental human action, using it as a subject to visualize invisible phenomena and connections to society through his unique artistic methods.
From a young age, Goto was fascinated by “things in motion.” During his student years, he created video works and interactive art that captured and edited movement. This experience deepened his interest in the relationship between movement, time, and space. After graduation, he began using 3D printing and projection technologies to translate the trajectories of movement into physical forms, presenting works that feature the distinctive use of light and have garnered high acclaim both in Japan and internationally.
In his recent projects, Goto revisits the accumulated narratives and layers of time embedded in human actions such as walking and traveling. His works, inspired by footage of pedestrians at intersections worldwide, investigate the continuity of movement and the multifaceted nature of time, intertwining past and future, digital and physical, reality and fiction. Through these intersections, he explores new perspectives and possibilities for time and space.
Goto’s installations “Heading” and “In Motion,” created during the COVID-19 pandemic, examine the human essence as beings who strive to keep moving despite restrictions on physical mobility. These works delve into the interplay between internal and physical movements, shedding light on how motion and flow impact society and the environment while posing the question: “Where are we headed?”
